Some of my Story

For those interested, I might talk about today's issues, what I'm reading, my hobbies and activities or any PC issues.

I was a Senior Programmer Analyst, Business Systems Analyst and Supervisor over my 36 years working in the IT industry.

I've work in the finance (Boston Stock Exchange, a major Boston investment firm), retail and private industries.  I also did IT contracting for a while.

I'm retired and enjoying the times I don't have to leave my home when the weather isn't the best.  Now that can mean TOO HOT or that nasty word SNOWING.

During those days I just enjoy another cup of coffee or hot cocoa.

One of favorite hobbies is to refinish furniture.  I find my pieces in the house, left out for the recycle or given to me.  What I don't do is uphoster anything.  I work with wood chairs, tables, end-tables, coffe tables and such.

I'll take them apart, clean and sand to a smooth finish, apply new glue or any hardware that is needed.  I then will use the stain color I feel is best or I'll try to match the original.

I think it's a sin to paint a piece furniture, hiding the grain, texture and look of a fine tree - also those that do paint furniture are trying to hide something.

My final step will be to apply the finish coating of what I feel is appropriate: Polyurethane, Shellac, Varnish and in a rare case even a water based finish.  I do prefer the Lacquers types because of the hardness and depth given to the final look.  The water base types can leave a cloudy appearance if too many coats are put on a piece.   Oh, and never use a Spar Varnish on furniture - it will retain a slight sticky feel to it (that's great for your sailboat and keeping your feet sticking to the deck).

If anyone is interested this is a good starting point.
