      NEW Strain found

This new strain is associated with a reaction to eating red-meats.

Originally found in Wisconsin, MN 8/4/2011.

No more bacon. Or salami. Or steak.

A new strain of tick-borne bacterium has been discovered in Wisconsin and Minnesota by researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, who say that 25 people have contracted the disease it causes.

The bacterium causes an illness called ehrlichiosis, which was thought to be very rare or absent in the state. Though rarely fatal, the disease causes fever, body aches, headache and fatigue. Most people can fight off the illness, but it could be more serious for those with compromised immune systems, researchers said.

The disease is treatable with antibiotics.

A newer drug, Doxycycline is being used now, but it does have some abdominal side effects.

I'd be interested if this works.
